Ringing in the New Year… What 2012 Has to Offer

2012… Another holiday season has come and gone… and another year is beginning. Raise your hand if you make New Year’s resolutions? Raise your hand if you’ve ever kept them?

I may be one of the few that makes resolutions that I can actually keep. What’s my secret? (*whisper*) Make it SMART.

NOT a good way to write a resolution

S =specific

M= measurable

A= attainable

R= realistic

T= timely

The abstract resolutions just don’t work. They don’t mean anything when you can’t measure their success or don’t have a definite plan to carry them out. “Lose weight,” “be kinder,” “be more patient,” “exercise more,” “eat healthier,” etc. sound nice, but traditionally fall to the wayside.

Let me be your resolution guide. 2012 WILL BE the year you make great goals AND achieve them!

Let’s practice. If your goal is to lose weight, here are some better ways to word your resolution: “I resolve to meet with a dietitian in the 1st two weeks of January to make a plan,” or “I resolve to eat at least 3 servings of vegetables every day,” or “I resolve to exercise at least 3 days per week which will include 30 minutes of walking and 10 minutes of weight training.”

Get the idea?? Pinpoint your plan to achieve your goals IN your resolution. Oh, and write it down. When something is on paper or in your calendar you are more likely to follow through.

My plan? Last year I did 1 marathon, 1 mini triathlon, 1 biathlon, 2 half marathons, a 5-miler and a handful of 5ks.

I’m beating it this year! In 2012 I will run 2 marathons, 4 half marathons, and do 3 triathlons (plus any other fun runs of my choosing). My plan is set. The dates are in the calendar, and the training schedules are already in my planner. (And since it’s officially out there for the world to see… I WILL do it)
